Description Kate Greenaway studied painting at what is now the Royal College of Art in London. This first book she published, Under the Window, is a collection of simple, perfectly idyllic verses about children, and it was an immediate bestseller. Mothers in liberal-minded “artistic” British circles who embraced the Arts and Crafts movement were drawn to these charming illustrations and the vision they conveyed of a gentle, contemplative childhood filled with wonder. Greenaway became one of the most celebrated illustrators of the Victorian era and her work influenced popular taste, fashion, and manners for several generations.
