Illustrations of the Nests and Eggs of Birds of Ohio
Description |
At the age of 29, Genevieve Jones visited the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia where she saw an exhibition of John James Audubon’s original paintings done for his famous book, Birds of America. She returned home to Ohio determined to embark on her own project to document something she felt was missing in Audubon’s work: images of the birds’ nests and eggs. Initially, she envisioned illustrating the nests and eggs of all North American birds, but her father persuaded her to focus on the 130 species of birds that nest in Ohio. Genevieve and her good friend, Eliza Schulze, had completed 15 of the illustrations for the book when Genevieve was stricken with typhoid fever and died at the age of 32. After weeks of grieving, her family determined that they would undertake the completion of the book as a memorial to her. Genevieve’s mother, Virginia, began to assist with the illustrations. |
