John Brown, an abolitionist, and a group made up of Black people and white people, attempted to incite a movement to liberate enslaved people from pro-slavery Southern states by taking over a federal arsenal of weapons. Many were killed during the raid, and eventually they were defeated. Brown and several others, including John A. Copeland, Shields Green, Edwin Coppock, and Aaron Stevens, were captured, tried, and executed.
