Description |
Led by members of Kent State Black United Students (BUS) and Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), demonstrators stage a sit-in, occupying the Student Activities Center, to protest against campus recruitment by the Oakland Police Department. This image is likely taken during the time period when the BUS and SDS led protestors voluntarily ended the occupation after being notified that day two of the recruitment had been canceled. They then marched across campus, stopping at various locations. According to published accounts of the event, the group was met in some locations by mostly white student "hecklers" singing the national anthem and other patriotic songs, shouting nationalistic slogans, saying they would block the protestors' entry to certain buildings, and proclaiming their objections to the BUS/SDS led demonstration. There were some altercations that occurred. See the Daily Kent Stater, November 14, 1968, and Involvement/2 Years Later, pages 277-284, for more information. |
