Two copies of a postcard featuring the interior view of a cell house with a guard tower in the center. Front Caption: "Interior view of Cell House, Illinois State Penitentiary at Stateville, near Joliet, Ill." Back Caption: "The cell houses are circular in form and all cells radiate toward and face the central point, where a guard's tower and observation point afford constant supervision by one officer, who also controls the locking and lighting systems. From this tower the cell doors are locked and unlocked by means of hydraulic pressure. The rays of the sun shine directly into every cell for at least two hours each day the sun shines." |
