and differentiates between the Task Force and the May 4 Coalition, which was a student group dedicated to protesting the construction of the new gym facility on the site of the Kent State shootings.

A student stands at a marker in the Prentice Hall Parking Lot during the 1977 Annual Commemoration of the Kent State shootings. The markers indicate the locations of students slain on May 4, 1970. As a result of advocacy by the May 4th Task Force, permanent markers were installed and dedicated in September 1999.

Tent City refers to the protests that occurred in the late 1970s surrounding the construction of the new gym facility on the site of the Kent State shootings. Some protesters pitched tents on the proposed building site and stayed for more than 60 days.

1979 Commemoration Poster

The annual commemoration in 1979 featured speakers, such as attorneys William Kunstler and Sanford Rosen, wounded students Thomas Grace and Robby Stamps, civil rights attorney Constance Slaughter-Harvey (Slaughter-Harvey represented the families of the students slain during the Jackson State killings) and folk singer John Bassette.
