Audio footage recorded by Bob Carpenter of an extended sit-in protest at Rockwell Hall on May 4, 1971. One of the major reasons for the events was the group's opposition to continuing ROTC programming at Kent State. Includes chants, clapping, and participants encouraging others to join them in the sit-in protest. There are then a series of people speaking, discussion of logistical matters such as getting water and bedding, legal rights and procedures, and more statements about what the group's protest is about. Speakers include Craig Morgan who provides legal and medical instructions to participants in anticipation of possible arrests and/or use of tear gas. Carpenter intermittently provides brief narration about the time of day, names of speakers, and other events. Also included is some on the scene discussion among Kent State officials, including President White, about what is going on and what the administrative response might be. As the day goes on, there is discussion of tactics along with music and singing. Much of the audio is difficult to hear due to low volume level and ambient noise. |
