Recorded statement of D. Tim Horchler conducted by the Commission on KSU Violence.

[Unknown Speaker]: Testing, one, two, three, four. Testing one, two. Would you please identify yourself, your address, and home phone number please.

[Tim Horchler]: My name is Don, and I go by my middle name Tim, Horchler. Box 3080, Lexington, Ohio.

[Unknown Speaker]: What is your student address here on campus?

[Tim Horchler]: Johnson Hall

[Unknown Speaker]: Johnson Hall. Okay, Tim, would you relate to us what you saw relating to a sniper being on a roof?

[Tim Horchler]: Well, I did not see anything. At the time, I was listening to a police band radio and as the Guardsmen were coming up on the hill towards Taylor and Johnson, I heard on the radio that the–whoever was talking, Guardsmen or police–said that there was a sniper on the roof. And a few seconds passed and then he was–then this same man repeated that he said, “They’re firing at us.”

[Unknown Speaker]: Now who was this and where did they say the sniper was?

[Tim Horchler]: I don’t know who was talking, it was–

[Unknown Speaker]: Was it a Guardsmen now?

[Tim Horchler]: It could have been either–I heard both Guardsmen and police on the radio, so I don’t know who was talking at the time.

[Unknown Speaker]: Do you know what roof they were referring to?

[Tim Horchler]: They did not specify a roof.

[Unknown Speaker]: Was this right before or after the shooting?

[Tim Horchler]: Before.

[Unknown Speaker]: Approximately how much before?

[Tim Horchler]: The first statement that there was a sniper on the roof, maybe a minute before the shooting, and, “They’re shooting at us,” was maybe five, ten seconds, if that long, before the shooting started.
[Unknown Speaker]: So there actually was the report, “They’re shooting at us,” before you heard any of the shots?

[Tim Horchler]: Right, he said that, definitely.

[Unknown Speaker]: Now, you don’t know if that was one of the Guardsmen who was on the hill at that time, do you?

[Tim Horchler]: I would think that it would had to have been a Guardsmen because he said, “They were shooting at us,” so he–whoever was speaking must have been with the group of soldiers that shot.

[Unknown Speaker]: And did you hear the bullet fire over the radio, or did you hear it from your room?

[Tim Horchler]: Well, I was in Johnson Hall at the time, so I heard it directly, not through the radio.

[Unknown Speaker]: Did you hear anything through the radio?

[Tim Horchler]: No, I wouldn’t say. No.

[Unknown Speaker]: Okay. Did you witness any other events on the days of May 1 through 4 that you might like to relate to us?

[Tim Horchler]: Well, I witnessed practically everything being–living in Johnson Hall, and I saw everything that happened on The Commons, plus the two marches through the campus. I followed them at a distance with the police radio monitoring it. Friday night, of course, I started listening after I heard the trouble that started downtown and it just gave a description of what was happening and what they were planning on doing.

[Unknown Speaker]: Were you with [unintelligible] during any of that?

[Tim Horchler]: Yeah, yes.

[Unknown Speaker]: From what you observed, do you think that the crowds at various times were being led by any number or group of people.

[Tim Horchler]: Well, I would believe that in that large of a crowd, someone would have to take the initiative to direct them to march through the campus, or when they started throwing rocks at the ROTC Building, or setting fires. Some–most of the people–a great majority were there, maybe supporters but not taking active parts. Definitely others were doing the leading and doing the–starting the trouble to make others follow.
[Unknown Speaker]: Did you recognize any of these people?

[Tim Horchler]: No, I–not while they were on The Commons. I know some people were down there because they lived there in Johnson Hall, but I can’t say that I saw anyone and recognized them.

[Unknown Speaker]: Was there anything else that you would like to report, as far as days 1 through 4?

[Tim Horchler]: No, I don’t believe so.
