This is a report of an interview with Robert Matson by Harold M. Mayer.

[Harold M. Mayer]: This is a report of an interview held on June 23rd with Dr. Robert Matson, Vice President for Student Affairs. In response to an inquiry relative to his schedule and activities during the weekend of May 4th, not long from previous interviews relative to the activities of the top officials of the University.

Around noon on May 4th, he was having lunch at the Brown Derby with President White and the other vice presidents, except Dr. Harris who was at home ill. Upon hearing of the shootings, they immediately returned back to the campus.

Relative to the events of Friday evening, in the vicinity of Friday evening, White and Vice President Matson were to appear at the–for the students who had gathered at the northwest corner of the campus at that time. They turned on a speaker on one of the police cars to announce that President White and Vice President Matson were on their way to meet with the students at that location. Dr. Matson indicated that [unintelligible] somewhere that they would, in fact, not appear. The student announced that Dr. Matson would not appear before the students–that Drs. White and Matson would in fact not appear before the students at that time.
