British & American Literature

This strong area of Special Collections and Archives’ holdings supports teaching and student work in the undergraduate and graduate-level English Literature programs and related areas of study. The works of British authors include that of Joseph Conrad, Robert Browning, Virginia Woolf, William Blake, and John Galsworthy, among others. American and Ohio authors are heavily represented in the collections, including Willa Cather, Hart Crane, Robert Lowry, William Carlos Williams, Richard Wright, Louis Bromfield, Lillian Hellman, Charles Brockden Brown, and Logan Pearsall Smith, to name just a few.

Extensive holdings of first editions are available, along with later editions published during the author’s lifetime, contributions to works by others, major biographical and critical works, as well as collections of literary manuscripts and letters. Collections of popular and genre fiction are also available, including series books, dime novels, mystery and detective fiction, chapbooks, penny dreadfuls, and science fiction.
